Wednesday, March 23rd Ethan Zohn Speaking Event, Middlesex Community College

by Ann Marie [Piekos] Borges, Survivor Junkie

When Pat Cook sent out an email a few months ago, saying the winner of Survivor Africa, Ethan Zohn, was going to be speaking at Middlesex College, I thought he was pulling a prank on us!   But today seeing was believing!
John, myself and Pat had a great day today meeting and lunching with Ethan.   The morning started out driving to Middlesex with John, discussing questions we would like to ask Ethan.

Since Survivor is in the tenth season, yesterday

I had gone into cbs.com to brush up on my memory of Survivor Africa being the 3rd season and many survivor castaways ago. I brought my Survivor Amazon buff, and a tiki torch with hope for an Ethan autograph.  Even though I felt a bit funny carrying a tiki torch around a college campus in March, I know that it will be a great addition next to Jeanne Hebert's (Survivor Amazon) autographed tiki torch.

Middlesex college was running its first civility day on campus.  This included Ethan's 1 hour program “Character: The Ultimate Survival Tool”. His talk was accompanied by some fun Survivor video, and touching Africa footage. During his talk John was "Joe photographer" and got a lot of great pictures.  Ethan also spoke about the organization he founded after he won the million dollars on Survivor Africa, Grassroots Soccer.

Ethan was a great speaker and was very down to earth.  After his program, he took questions (from his personal life, to survivor and grassroots) and then he signed

autographs for over a 1/2 hour.

Yes- I got my buff and tiki torch signed!   Next was the luncheon (by invitation only- knowing Pat Cook has its advantages), we walked the short way with Ethan, talking about reality tv (he is a reality buff like us).

After a short photo session with everyone present (us included),  we got our lunch (some sort of calzone, pasta salad and green salad). Sitting down at a table for 12 with Ethan and his Mom, we enjoyed our lunch as we fired off Survivor questions to both Ethan and his Mom !
He really seemed to enjoy talking about Survivor and other reality shows.    We questioned him on his friendship with Lex, what he thought of each survivor season, how things really are behind the survivor scenes, tidbits about Survivor Africa and Boston Rob came up, of course. John talked to him about his camera, Ethan apparently has the same camera and wanted to know how to load the pictures to a computer. Ethan passed out his business cards when he got requests for material regarding his grassroots organization. After 45 minutes of fun conversation, everyone thanked him for coming.   All too soon it was over. As we drove home with our autographs, pictures and memories, we replayed the days events. We left feeling like we just had lunch with a fellow reality show junkie.  It was a great day!
